Association's History
In 1932, Dr. Albert E. Berry called a meeting which resulted in the
formation of the Canadian Institute on Sewage and Sanitation in
1933. The Institute later became affiliated with the US based
Federation of Sewage Works Associations (later known as the Water
Pollution Control Federation).
In 1961 the name of the Canadian Institute on Sewage and Sanitation
was changed to the Canadian Institute on Pollution Control. Although
quite separate entities, the Canadian Section AWWA and the Canadian
Institute on Pollution Control shared both office space and
secretarial staff in Toronto through what was known as the Water and
Sanitation Secretariat. It was guided by Dr. Berry and ably
administered for many years by Mae Grove.
In 1969, the Canadian Institute on Pollution Control briefly formed an
Ontario Branch and later dissolved. Its assets were distributed on a
per capita basis across Canada. The Pollution Control Association of
Ontario was born from the Ontario Branch in 1971, under the
presidency of Fred Woods, later City Administrator of Guelph,
Ontario.
In 1993, the association's name was officially changed to the
Water Environment Association of Ontario. The Water
Pollution Control Federation is now known as the Water Environment
Federation.
