Newsletter - December 1998Meeting the Challenge of Change in Public Education The Public Education Committee and WEAO representatives staffed a display and provided a workshop at the November 5-7, 1998, Science Teachers' Association Conference, Meeting the Challenge of Change. The Conference was a resounding success with almost 2,500 participants rather than the expected 1,500.
Cindy Toth demonstrates the 'wastewater collection system'. Obviously, the science and technology teachers are interested and challenged by the changing requirements in the school system these days. With the new curriculum, there is an increased emphasis on water systems and wetland ecology that is covered exceptionally well in the Water Sourcebooks. The demand for the Water Sourcebooks at the Conference was overwhelming. The Grade K to 2 version is now available. We were fortunate to get copies for the Conference. Many thanks go to members of the Public Education Committee for staffing the display, and to Sandy and Bob Pickett for putting 25 Sourcebooks together to be given away at the Saturday morning workshop and putting up and picking up the display/materials. As well, thanks to Elaine Gilliland (Region of Peel) as co-presenter at the workshop. A terrific wastewater collection system was constructed with materials readily available to teachers and students, e.g. paper towel and toilet paper rolls, straws, shoe boxes, Pringles chip containers (great to illustrate CSO in-line and off-line storage options), etc. I expect that the WEF publication order line is burning up with calls from Ontario teachers for these valuable curriculum resource materials. The committee will be
investigating options to distribute the Water Sourcebooks in Ontario. You can do your bit
to spread the word about these order a Water Sourcebook for your kid's school. The
Grade 9-12 version is $29.95 US, the Grade 3-5 is $21.95 US and the new Grade K-2 is
$21.95 US. Order now by calling 1-800-666-0206. |
