Technical learning and knowledge sharing are an important part of WEAO, but the relationships built along the way are just as valuable.
Throughout the year, WEAO creates opportunities for members to meet colleagues, exchange experiences and build connections across different organizations, disciplines and career stages.
Sometimes those connections begin during a technical session or conference. Other times, they happen in a much more informal setting.
Building Connections Beyond the Technical Program
This summer, WEAO Young Professionals brought members together at Woodbine Beach in Toronto for a volleyball tournament, creating an opportunity to connect outside of the traditional conference or seminar environment.
Open to all skill levels, the event was about more than competition. It provided a relaxed way for participants to meet new people, reconnect with colleagues and strengthen relationships within the water and wastewater community.
Activities like these complement WEAO’s technical programming and help create the sense of community that keeps professionals connected throughout their careers.
Mentorship Across Career Stages
Mentorship is another important way WEAO helps create meaningful connections.
Students and emerging professionals’ benefit from opportunities to learn from people who have already navigated different career paths and industry challenges, while experienced professionals have an opportunity to share knowledge and support the next generation.
At this year’s WEAO Conference, a mentor-mentee networking event created dedicated space for those conversations and connections to happen.
These relationships can provide professional guidance, broaden networks and introduce emerging professionals to people and opportunities they may not otherwise encounter.
Staying Connected
Opportunities to connect continue throughout the year.
Coming up this fall, members attending WEFTEC in New Orleans will once again have an opportunity to gather at the Canadian Icebreaker, bringing Canadian water professionals together for an informal evening of networking and connection.
Whether through a conference, mentorship opportunity, Young Professionals activity or social event, there are many ways to become more involved in the WEAO community.
